The Mechanical Engineering Department educates the engineers of tomorrow by integrating classroom theory and practical hands-on projects, by emphasizing the process of learning and critical thinking, by conducting original research, and by promoting professional relationships among the university, the business community, and engineering colleagues
SPIT's Mechanical Engineering Department serves its students, will serve alumni, and the nation through a variety of academic, community services, and research programs.
Objectives
- Utilize fundamental technical knowledge and skills in mathematics, science, and engineering to analyze and solve problems, and apply these abilities to generate new knowledge, ideas or products in academia, industry or government
- Demonstrate practical experience and organizational skills to the students so that they can interact and communicate effectively (written and/or oral) with others (e.g., supervisor, client and/or team) with an appreciation for intellectual diversity, involved in the project

- Understand professional and ethical responsibilities toward peers, employers, and society and follows these precepts in their daily lives
Infrastructure
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is fully equipped with highly sophisticated equipments, well developed laboratories, 2 seminar halls and huge workshop, two drawing halls and 125 high configured Personal Computers with all updated software.
Mechanical engineering laboratories provide basic fundamental understating about the subjects and opportunity to learn and innovate.
Mechanical engineering department has been following fully equipped laboratories at Merchant Institute of Technology,Piludara.

Ltd, Rieter India Pvt Ltd and many more.
We also encourage and motivate final year students to write GATE and other Competative examinations.
Future
This is an era of global competitiveness which call for continuous reform in curriculum, to meet the future target we at SPIT intended to develop both departmental laboratories as well as faculty, to accomplish this phase wise development programme is prepared. In the initial phase of the laboratory development we would like to established robotics laboratory, vibration laboratory, RP (Rapid Prototype) laboratory with the induction of sophisticated equipment like vibrometer cum FFT analyser, RP machine, CMM, 3D-scanner & printer etc.
As a part of our faculty programme we intend to develop subject wise expertise with motivation toward research, expert lectures from eminent industrial persons and industrial visits which will enhance practical knowledge base, etc are formulated.
